How does belt driven linear motion systems work?

LIMON is world-leading manufacturer of linear motion system and automation components. LIMON have been leading the development of linear motion technology since 2003, and continues to develop innovative linear products that offer new solutions to design engineers.

LIMON can not only provide linear motion components but also provide integrated linear motion products. LIMON linear actuator is a successful products in the market. LIMON linear actuator have two types, one is belt driven linear motion systems, another one is ball screw driven linear motion systems.

In order to select the proper linear mechanical actuator, some important considerations, such as the desired load capacity, or thrust force, and necessary stroke distance, must be taken into account.  While these are primary considerations, others such as maintenance burden certainly play an important role as well.

Two widely used types of mechanized linear actuators are differentiated by their drive mechanisms- belt-driven and ball screw driven actuators.  Both types are employed in similar types of applications, but the two differ significantly in function.  Each type possesses unique strengths and important limitations which must be carefully considered in the selection of an actuator.

The belt-driven actuator operates under the same principles as the conveyor belt system. Often, the belt drive is enclosed within a protective case, and attached to a carriage. The belt drive translates rotary motion to linear motion via a timing belt connected between two circular pulleys. The timing belt is usually made from a fiber-reinforced elastomer, but many other belt materials are available for more demanding applications. The belt contains teeth that interface with the rotor pulleys to efficiently transfer torque and prevent slipping. The belt drive is enclosed within an aluminum body while the carriage rides on top, and the drive shaft interface is typically situated perpendicular to the side of the actuator.

LIMON belt driven linear motion system and actuators are available in three different configurations, allowing engineers to select standard models for off-the-shelf availability, plug-and-play models for ready out-of-the-box automation, and customer built models that allow for a wide range of configurations.

  • Standard Belt Driven Linear Motion System

Standard actuators are available in stock travel lengths from 100 mm to 4000 mm and offer users a number of commonly configured options. Off-the-shelf availability allows for fast delivery while still providing industrial quality for a range of linear motion and automation applications.

  • Plug-and-Play Belt Driven Linear Motion System

Plug-and-play actuators and belt drives provide users with ready out-of-the box automation functionality. Each unit comes complete with actuator/belt drive, a UL approved electric motor, and PLC device. These models are a good fit for educational and university robotics, or laboratory and research applications.

  • Custom Belt Driven Linear Motion System

Custom actuators and belt drives deliver the same features as standard models, however, these models allow users to specify custom specifications including but not limited to cart design, belt options, extrusion size, length and finish, and any special requirements for gearboxes and motors. The modular design of LIMON belt driven actuators allows for fast customization to meet most specifications without ordering a totally custom item, ultimately reducing cost.
