Are positioning errors, unstable movement, and slow response preventing your automated equipment from achieving reliable performance?
A servomechanism is a closed-loop control system that automatically regulates position, speed, torque, or another mechanical variable. It compares a command with feedback from the actual movement, calculates the error, and corrects the actuator output. A typical servomechanism includes a controller, drive, motor, feedback sensor, and mechanical transmission.
This guide explains its operation, components, applications, selection factors, and future role in industrial linear motion.
What Is the Correct Servomechanism Definition?
The practical Définition d'un servomécanisme is an automatic control system that uses feedback to make a mechanical output follow a commanded value. The controlled output may be angular position, linear position, rotational speed, linear velocity, acceleration, force, or torque. The term “servomecanismo,” commonly found in Spanish-language engineering materials, describes the same control concept.
Unlike a basic motor system that simply receives power, a servomechanism measures what actually happens at the output. It then compares the measured result with the target command. When a difference exists, the controller calculates the error and modifies the actuator output until the error is reduced to an acceptable level.
A mécanisme d'asservissement is therefore not just a servo motor. It is a complete control loop consisting of electronic and mechanical components. Its performance depends on the controller, drive, motor, feedback device, coupling, ball screw or other transmission, linear guides, bearings, load, and supporting machine structure.
What Components Make Up a Servo Mechanism?
A typical servo mechanism begins with a motion controller, PLC, CNC controller, or industrial computer. This controller generates the target position, speed, or torque command. A servo drive receives the command and converts it into the voltage and current required by the motor. The motor then generates rotary motion and torque.
A mechanical transmission transfers this motion to the load. In a linear axis, the transmission may include a ball screw, timing belt, gearbox, rack-and-pinion system, or complete linear actuator. Linear guides and bearings support the moving load, resist external forces and moments, and maintain the required movement path.
The feedback device measures actual system behavior. Rotary encoders are frequently mounted on servo motors, while linear encoders can measure the position of the moving table directly. Force sensors, resolvers, current sensors, and velocity sensors may also provide feedback.
Every component affects performance. High encoder resolution cannot fully compensate for ball screw backlash, structural deflection, poor guide alignment, or coupling flexibility. Successful servo design therefore requires coordinated electrical, control, and mechanical engineering.
How Does a Servomechanism Work?
A servomechanism operates through a continuous command, measurement, comparison, and correction process. First, the controller defines a target such as moving a linear table 300 millimeters at a specified speed. The servo drive supplies current to the motor, and the motor rotates the ball screw or other transmission to move the table.
The encoder measures actual movement and sends feedback to the drive or controller. The system subtracts the measured value from the commanded value to calculate following error. It then adjusts motor torque, speed, or position to reduce that error. This process occurs repeatedly at very high speed.
Many servo systems use nested control loops. The current loop controls torque, the velocity loop regulates speed, and the position loop manages final location. Proper tuning balances responsiveness and stability. An aggressively tuned system may oscillate when mechanical rigidity is insufficient, while conservative tuning may produce slow response.
Mechanical resistance also affects the loop. Excessive guide friction, incorrect ball screw preload, misalignment, or inadequate lubrication can increase motor current and reduce positioning consistency.
What Types of Servomechanisms Are Used in Industry?
Servomechanisms can be classified by the variable they control, the feedback arrangement, and the type of actuator. A position servo moves a load to a commanded location. A velocity servo maintains a specified speed, while a torque or force servo regulates mechanical output under changing operating conditions.
Rotary servomechanisms control shaft rotation and are frequently connected to ball screws, belts, gearboxes, or rotary tables. Linear servomechanisms generate or control straight-line movement. These may use a rotary servo motor with a mechanical conversion system or a direct-drive linear motor.
Most modern industrial servomechanisms are closed-loop systems. Semi-closed-loop arrangements measure motor rotation, while fully closed-loop systems measure the final moving table through a linear encoder. Fully closed-loop feedback can compensate for some transmission-related positioning errors, although it cannot eliminate insufficient rigidity or poor mechanical construction.
Hydraulic and pneumatic servo systems are also used where high force or specific environmental characteristics are required. However, electromechanical servo systems are increasingly popular because they offer programmable control, energy efficiency, cleanliness, and convenient integration with industrial automation networks.
Where Are Servomechanisms Used in Linear Motion?
Servomechanisms are essential in applications that require accurate, responsive, and repeatable movement. Typical examples include CNC machine tools, industrial robots, electronic assembly equipment, semiconductor manufacturing, packaging machines, printing systems, automated inspection equipment, laser processing, medical devices, warehouse automation, and high-speed material handling.
In a servo-driven ball screw axis, the motor supplies rotary torque, the screw converts rotation into linear movement, and linear guides support the table. The feedback system monitors movement while the controller corrects position and speed. This arrangement can provide high thrust, repeatability, rigidity, and efficiency when all components are correctly matched.
Applications with long strokes or very high travel speeds may use belt-driven actuators or linear motors. Vertical axes may need a holding brake, counterbalance, or mechanical safety system. High-precision applications must also account for thermal expansion, screw lead error, preload, lubrication, mounting accuracy, and structural deformation.
Limon supplies linear guides, ball screws, linear bearings, and linear actuators that help translate servo commands into dependable physical movement.
How Should You Design and Select a Servomechanism?
Begin by defining measurable application requirements, including payload, external force, stroke, maximum speed, acceleration, positioning accuracy, repeatability, cycle time, duty cycle, and mounting orientation. Environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, dust, vibration, corrosion, and cleanroom requirements must also be considered.
Next, calculate the required motor torque and speed. For a ball screw axis, important factors include screw diameter, lead, efficiency, preload, critical speed, buckling capacity, support arrangement, and reflected inertia. A smaller screw lead increases mechanical advantage but requires more motor revolutions for a given linear speed. A larger lead supports faster movement but may increase the required motor torque.
The selected feedback resolution should support the required load-position accuracy, but resolution alone is not enough. Backlash, guide clearance, coupling compliance, bearing rigidity, and machine deformation must remain within acceptable limits. The controller and servo drive should also provide suitable communication, tuning, diagnostics, safety, and fault-protection functions.
Limon’s technical team can help customers evaluate these mechanical factors and select compatible linear motion components for new or upgraded servo systems.
What Is the Future of Servomechanism Technology?
Future servomechanisms will combine more intelligent control with better mechanical integration. Automatic drive tuning, adaptive control, vibration suppression, and advanced filtering will make systems easier to commission. Connected drives and sensors will monitor current, temperature, vibration, friction, following error, and operating cycles, helping maintenance teams identify developing problems before equipment fails.
Digital twins and simulation tools will allow engineers to test load profiles, motor sizing, ball screw selection, and controller settings before building the physical machine. Functional safety, real-time industrial Ethernet, decentralized control, and energy-regeneration capabilities will also become increasingly important.
These technologies do not reduce the need for high-quality mechanical components. Faster control cannot fully correct excessive backlash, inaccurate screw lead, poor guide rigidity, contamination, or incorrect installation.
